It's Good To Get Lost Sometimes!

Welcome to July’s Connections newsletter, bit later than normal – have you had that kind of month where time has just seeped away?  I have.   The theme this month as about getting lost – and it can sometime be the perfect thing. And to follow up on what I mentioned last month- I have a special launch offer for the Passion Test for Business. And as always – some fun and inspirational stuff.

It’s Good To Get Lost Sometimes!

I went for a hike in the Spanish mountains recently, just behind where we live on the coast. We knew where we wanted to begin our hike – the observatory at the top of the mountain - we could see it clearly from the road we were on.

We set off down the road that we thought was the right one and asked a local farmer if we were going in the right direction. He told us no, we needed to go on a totally different road. So, bowing to his superior knowledge, we turned around and headed off in this new direction. Right from the start it felt wrong but we followed his directions and all the landmarks he had mentioned showed up so we thought he must have known what he was talking about.

And sure as eggs are eggs we ended up nowhere near where we wanted to go! However we decided that we would go with the flow and follow the road and see where it took us. We came to this tiny village at the end of the road below some wind turbines and so decided that our hike that day would be to climb up to the turbines – surely a fantastic view from the top.

It was a beautiful hike. The oleander were in flower and the winding path took us up through ravines and through wild flowers in either side. We both agreed that this was probably as good, if not better, than what we had planned in the first place. We got to the top and there in the distance was the observatory. We realised that even though we had listened to someone else rather than ourselves, had gotten lost and were on the ‘wrong’ path we had achieved the view we were aiming for, just from a different perspective.

So what has this to do life?

Well, the first step to achieving anything is to hold a strong vision – we knew that we wanted to reach the top of the mountain and get that view on either side of the ridge. And, we got exactly that, just in a different way.

And although it is important to ask for outside help or information it is equally important to listen to your inner voice. We had a feeling that the local farmer was wrong but acquiesced to his ‘superior’ knowledge. In fact we laughed about it later as we know it is true that in Spain the locals hate to say “I don’t know” and so will appear knowledgeable when they aren’t! So listen to your inner guidance – make a judgement call once you have asked for information and if it doesn’t feel right check it out.

Then there’s ‘going with the flow’ – it is cliché term nowadays, but doing just that gave us a fantastic adventure ending up in the beautiful hike in a place that we never would have visited. In The Passion Test we have people write out their top five passions on a passion card and on the bottom of the card is printed “this or something better”. That is the No Tension part of life, the letting go and allowing yourself to be surprised at what life can bring. Instead of bemoaning the fact that we were on the wrong end of the mountain we enjoyed the whole day for the adventure it was.

Do you feel that haven’t gotten a clear vision of where you want to get to? Or maybe you are feeling rather lost along the way? Would you like to get back in touch with that inner guidance and find that clarity so you can climb your mountain? This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. How powerful are your passions in your business? Consider these questions: Have you ever:

• Lost the passion and the drive in your business to the point of being totally disengaged from why you started it in the first place?
• Got so confused by all the decisions and choices on offer, you go down the wrong path and waste time and money on expensive products or courses which bring absolutely no reward?
• Lost clarity, focus and direction in your business so that you begin to resent it and even start contemplating a job instead?
• Been confused about which niche to take when there are so many things you love doing!
• Spend hours and days doing tasks you don't love and which aren't in flow because you feel you 'have' to do them to be a success?
• Craved more hours in the day to simply enjoy your life and your family and the good things once again?
• Wonder what your unique contribution or life purpose is?

Fun Stuff

Talk about walking your talk!

Thanks to Mike Smith for this one:

Young people forget that old people had a career before they retired...... Charley, a new retiree-greeter at Wal-Mart, just couldn't seem to get to work on time. Every day he was 5, 10, 15 minutes late. But he was a good worker, really tidy, clean-shaven, sharp-minded and a real credit to the company and obviously demonstrating their "Older Person Friendly" policies.

One day the boss called him into the office for a talk. "Charley, I have to tell you, I like your work ethic, you do a bang-up job when you finally get here; but your being late so often is quite bothersome." "Yes, I know boss, and I am working on it." "Well good, you are a team player. That's what I like to hear.” “Yes sir, I understand your concern and I’ll try harder.”

Seeming puzzled, the manager went on to comment, “It's odd though your coming in late. I know you're retired from the Armed Forces. What did they say to you there if you showed up in the morning so late and so often?" The old man looked down at the floor, then smiled. He chuckled quietly, then said with a grin, "They usually saluted and said, ‘Good morning, Admiral, can I get your coffee, sir?’”
