Happy 2012! Welcome to the first newsletter of 2012 – that date holds so much energy – so this month I thought we’d look at what it might hold for you. A New Year - What's Your Focus?
Last month we looked at taking stock of the past year, really acknowledging what you have achieved and seeing how easy it is to just keep on pushing forward without giving yourself a great big pat on the back. So I really hope you did take stock and celebrate your wins of last year. If you didn’t, then that’s the first thing you do this year.
Celebrating wins is very important, you put a huge amount of effort and focus into what you do. And it is where you want to put your effort for this coming year that (once you’ve celebrated – got that?) is your next step. Now you can set goals and intentions which is great. However I like to focus on visions.
One very important part of the Passion Test for Business program is creating a vision for your business. If you do not have a destination then you will not have map to get there. It is rather like setting off to ‘somewhere’ and expecting you’ll find the route. Without a destination you cannot create a map. The destination will also give you some pointers to the way-markers, mini destinations that will tell you that you are going in the right direction.
Your vision is also important because it will define your strategy. For example the steps you would need to take to reach the goal of doing 30% better than last year and doing 100% better than last year will be different. If you think small and go for the small goal then you may indeed reach it but you’d have no chance of reaching the bigger one. Go for the bigger one, use the strategies that could get you there and you will do much better.
So I thought as this year feels very pivotal for many people that it would be a good thing to create a vision. In the Passion Test for Business once we have defined your unique contribution, business passions and your markers, the ‘what ‘ that will be happening when you are living them all, we look at where you wish to be in 10 years. Reason we start that far ahead is that all your imitations cannot arise when you think that far out. You have no idea what might happen by then so you can think big. Really big.
Then you ask yourself where do I need to be in 5 years to reach that vision and then again in 2 and 1 years? Work it backwards and you will find that you do not get so caught up in the how of it but simply focus on the what – what you want to achieve.
From that you can set your action points and intentions to make 2012 great year.
